Everything They Did, and the Body That Kept the Receipts
He called you crazy for noticing. He rewrote last night by morning. He punished you with silence for three days. He checked your phone and called it love. He cheated, then made it your fault. He was charming in front of everyone and cold the second the door shut. He kept you short of money so you could not go anywhere. He dropped you, then came back the moment you got on with it.
If you recognise even half of that list, this is about you, and it is about the body you have been living in since.
None of it was love. It was a technique.
The patterns of narcissistic abuse are so consistent that people who have never met describe their relationships in the same words. That is because the behaviour is a system, not a personality quirk. Gaslighting keeps you unsure. Silent treatment keeps you anxious. Monitoring keeps you small. Cheating with blame keeps you apologising. Charm in public keeps you unbelieved. Financial control keeps you stuck. Discard and return keeps you hooked. Each piece feeds the others, and together they produce a person who cannot leave and cannot explain why.
Why the body kept the receipts
Here is what rarely gets said. Your body recorded all of it. Every time you were called crazy for noticing something true, the body logged a small shock. Every three day silence was three days of raised cortisol. Every charm and cold switch was a lesson in never relaxing. Long after you have stopped thinking about any single incident, the body is still carrying the sum of them as tension, exhaustion, gut problems, broken sleep and a nervous system that treats peace as a warning. You are not still dwelling on it. It is still living in you. Rather different.
What it looks like a year later
I see this on every retreat. People who got out long ago and still cannot work out why they are so tired. Why they go quiet around confident people. Why kindness from a new partner makes them anxious rather than happy. Why they keep one foot by the door in every relationship. They have done the reading, they understand the terms, and the body has not moved an inch, because understanding is not the same as release.
The now
You walked on eggshells, and now you come through your own front door and let your shoulders drop. You silenced yourself, and now you say the hard thing with your voice shaking and you say it anyway. You were hurt and bullied, and now you are around people who are gentle with you on purpose. You were cheated on, and now you are chosen in the open, with nothing kept from you. Every one of those nows gets built in the healing. The sessions, the crying on the floor, the mornings you got up and did it again. That is the work that turns survival into a life you get to love.
Letting good things in
The bit nobody mentions is how uncomfortable the good part is. Someone kind turns up and your whole system goes looking for the catch. You wait for the mood to change, you read too much into a short reply, you keep expecting the switch. Your body learned years ago that calm came right before something went wrong, so it treats peace as a threat. That takes time to unlearn. Months of nothing bad happening, over and over, until the system finally stops bracing. Good people exist. A softer life exists. Your body just needs long enough to believe it.
Why it is just as true for men
Most of what is written about narcissistic abuse is written for women, and the list above will read as if it is too. The pattern is identical when the roles are reversed. Men come to our retreats carrying the same monitoring, the same silent treatments, the same financial control and the same discard and return, often with the added weight of nobody having believed them, because the story does not fit what people expect abuse to look like. The body does not care about the script. It keeps the receipts the same way. If you are a man reading this and recognising yourself, this is for you too.
What the healing actually looks like
People imagine somatic healing as something gentle and vague. In the room it is anything but. Bodies that have been braced for a decade shake. People cry in a way they have not cried since they were children. Rage that was never safe to feel finally gets felt, and then it goes. Underneath all of that, once it has moved, is a stillness that most people have not touched since before the relationship began. That stillness is who you were, and it is who you get to be again.
Why people travel to Bali for this
Healing retreats in Bali have become something of a search term in their own right, and plenty of what comes up is yoga and smoothies. What we run at JAX in Uluwatu is a trauma healing retreat. Five days, a small group, three somatic healing sessions a day with breathwork, bodywork and energy work, held by facilitators who have been through their own version of this. The island does its part, the warmth, the sea, the distance from everything the abuse touched, and the work does the rest. People come from the UK, Australia, Europe and across Asia, usually alone, and leave with a group of people who have seen them at their most honest.
If you are weighing up healing retreats in Bali and wondering which one is for you, the question to ask is whether the retreat works with the body or only talks about it. Rest is lovely, and you will get plenty of it here, but rest alone does not move what narcissistic abuse leaves behind. That takes work that goes beneath words, and that is the work we do.
Where the receipts get cashed in
At JAX we work with the body directly, because that is where the abuse was stored and that is where it has to leave from. Breath, bodywork and energy work bring the nervous system back to safety, cortisol comes down, the bracing lets go, and the person underneath all of it gets to come out. People leave saying they feel fifteen years lighter, and they mean it.
Our JAX healing retreats run once a month in Uluwatu, Bali, for women and men, and they are built for exactly this kind of recovery. If you are still in the relationship and reading this in secret, please reach out to someone you trust today. The way out exists, and so does the life on the other side of it.
